Our journey

The Schneider Corporation was incorporated on June 27, 1962. Since then, we have remained a family-owned business, committed to serving clients as true partners and maintaining a strong, team-focused culture.

The Vincent J. and Beatrice M. Schneider Years - Generation One - June 27, 1962 – June 30, 1983 (21 years)

  • It all began when Founder, Vincent Schneider (a brilliant mathematician), discovered his passion for land surveying and civil engineering while serving in World War II. Upon his return from service and utilizing the GI Bill, Vince enrolled at Purdue University.

  • After completing his education, Vincent became a licensed professional land surveyor and a licensed professional engineer.

  • In 1962, Vincent and Beatrice, his wife, along with local businessman Robert Park, founded Schneider Engineering Corp. and made up the first company board of directors. Vincent and Beatrice were also the first generation of Schneiders to run the company while Robert Park was the first non-family member to share in company ownership.

Generation One – Cont’d

  • Modestly equipped with a trailer, a few men, some surveying equipment, and calculating devices, Vince went to work focusing on surveying and engineering projects for single-family and multi-family residential clients in the Indianapolis area.

  • Schneider’s first office was located at 3675 N. Post Road. And among the first few survey vehicles was a 1950 Cadillac.

  • In 1968, Vincent’s son, John Schneider joined the firm and began taking an active role in the management and expansion of services into the local and regional public sector as well as the United States Corps of Engineering.

  • As the business grew, and John gained experience, he took on more of a leadership role allowing Vincent to focus on technical endeavors.

  • The Gen. One years were governed by the original corporate bylaws, dated (June 27, 1962).

The John V. and Marylin J. Schneider Years – Generation Two – June 30, 1983 – December 30, 2002 (19.5 years)

  • When Vincent retired in 1983, after almost 20-years at the helm of Schneider Engineering Corp., John and his wife Marilyn became co-owners and John assumed the role of President and CEO.

  • Gary Kent joined the firm one month later on July 30, 1983.

  • Bradford D. DeReamer became a principal of the firm on May 5, 1985, only the second non-family member to share ownership in the firm.

  • At this point, the company had built a tremendous reputation for quality and service among a diverse client-base and was well on its way to greater success under John’s leadership.

  • In 1986, with the firm expanding due to a wide range of new services, they moved to their second office. Located at 3020 N. Post Road, just short of a mile south of their original office.

The John V. and Marylin J. Schneider Years – Generation Two – Cont’d

  • Schneider performs their first airport survey in 1986.

  • Schneider incorporates AutoCAD into their workflows in 1987.

  • The residential engineering group outgrew corporate headquarters and moved to 3300 N. Post Road in 1988.

  • John recognized he needed to expand his skillset in order to continue growing the family business.

  • Studying at night, after work, he obtained an MBA from what is currently known as University of Indianapolis.

  • The Schneider culture was defined under John’s leadership when he engaged with an outside facilitator and developed the company’s first mission and vision statements starting in late 1988.

  • Becoming aware of the teachings of Robert K. Greenleaf (“The Servant as Leader”, 1970), he introduced Servant Leadership to the firm.

Generation Two – Cont’d

  • In 1989 John recognized and responded to an industry technology opportunity that led to the offering of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services, which ultimately transformed from a niche service to thriving core business enterprise.

  • In 1999, the Schneider Family acquired a former military barracks on the decommissioned Fort Benjamin Harrison, just up the road from their office, in Northeast Indianapolis. The barracks was completely renovated by 2000 when the company moved into their new corporate headquarter at 8901 Otis Ave. Originally operated as a single tenant facility, multiple tenants now share the building with Schneider Geomatics including Schneider Geospatial.

Generation Two – Cont’d

  • On September 11, 2001, the war on terror began.

  • After almost 20 years at the helm of Schneider Engineering Corp., and after only 15 months from 911, John retired. He left a legacy of service to the company, employees, clients and the community.  He also left a successful, growing company operating out of their new corporate headquarters.

The J Barry Schneider & Victoria Schneider Temple Years – Generation Three – December 30, 2002 – Present (23 years and counting)

  • Upon John’s retirement, in 2002, Barry and Victoria became the 3rd generation majority owners of the company.

  • Barry assumed the position of Chairman of the Board while Victoria served as President and CEO in addition to being a board director.

  • Raul Zavaleta joined the board shortly thereafter and has been involved with the company since.

  • With Victoria serving as CEO, and Mrs. Schneider maintaining a minority ownership stake in the firm, Schneider was designated a women-owned business enterprise (WBE).

Generation Three – Cont’d

  • In the early 2000’s, the company was growing, rapidly, along with the residential housing industry.

  • Services had expanded to address most land development needs.

  • The new corporate headquarters filled up, employment topped 300 employees, the third floor was finished out and quickly occupied by the growing GIS team.

  • Housing starts began to drop off as early as 2006 and since Schneider was so involved in residential housing, we began to feel it before the official beginning of the fall.

  • This ultimately became know as the Great Recession, starting sharply with the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers on September 15, 2008.

Generation Three – Cont’d

  • Schneider, like virtually every other consultant in the business, responded by making major, necessary cuts to staff in order to keep the business afloat.

  • We downsized across the board, dropped unprofitable services, consolidated more personnel into corporate headquarters and closed unviable offices.

  • In short, we made many unpopular but necessary cuts to staff, salaries and even benefits to survive the largest most severe global economic downturn since the Great Depression, triggered by the collapse of the U.S. housing bubble and the financial crisis of 2008. It led to massive job losses, widespread foreclosures, and a slow, painful recovery.

Generation Three – Cont’d

  • But often times, with challenges, come opportunities.

  • The challenge was that the continued slow drag of the housing downturn reeked havoc on our Engineering Department who continued to suffer as late as 2017.

  • The opportunity was to reorganize.

  • In 2018, The Schneider Corporation announced the reorganization of the company into Schneider Geospatial (from the GIS and e-Government businesses) and Schneider Geomatics (from Surveying and Engineering businesses), recognizing the ongoing evolution of the businesses and allowed each to better serve its clients and employees.

  • In 2019, The Schneider Corporation further separated its two divisions. Schneider Geospatial was spun off into its own limited liability corporation leaving Schneider Geomatics as The Schneider Corporation’s single operating division. Even after the spin-off, however, the Schneider family-maintained ownership of both entities.

  • This reorganization and rebranding was done for a dual purpose: focus and future growth.

Generation Three – Cont’d

  • Beginning with the Schneider Geospatial spin-off as a separate company, Schneider Geomatics was no longer just a division of Schneider Engineering Corporation. It was the entire corporation. As such, the “a Division of” language was dropped from the name which simply became Schneider Geomatics.

  • In 2022 Schneider Geospatial received a significant growth investment from a private equity firm. This investment significantly offered Schneider Geospatial the ability to accelerate growth and invest in enhancing their products and services while also bringing new solutions to the market. With this investment, the Schneider family gave up sole ownership of Schneider Geospatial.

  • Later that year Victoria Schneider Temple stepped back from her CEO role and is now an ower, a director and a vice president.

  • With that, the era of Schneider as a WBE came to a close.

Generation Three – Cont’d

  • After the Schneider Geospatial spin-off Schneider Geomatics looked to acquisitions as a means of growing their business.

  • In 2023 Schneider Geomatics expanded into southwest Indiana with the acquisition of Providence Land Group out of Vincennes.  Led by Brian Resenbeck and Brent Johnson, PLG was created in 2013 when the civil engineering and surveying firm Stradtner, Rowland and Associates (SRA) combined with the surveying firm, A to B Surveying. Together, they bring decades of experience in southwestern Indiana providing surveying services to clients ranging from investor-owned utilities, municipalities, engineers, architects, commercial developers and industrial clients.

Generation Three – Cont’d

  • In August of 2024 Schneider Geomatics expanded their land development capacity with the acquisition of Roger Ward Engineering, Inc. Founded in 1999 by Roger Ward Jr., RWE was a civil engineering and consulting firm based in the Broad Ripple District of Indianapolis, Indiana with specialized services including sustainable site design, development consulting and land surveying (boundary, topographic, ALTA, construction staking and as-builts). With over 25 years of experience, RWE brought substantial depth of knowledge through a team comprised of experienced professionals, land surveyors, site planners and designers for Residential, Commercial, Institutional-Public and Green-Sustainable Design projects.

Generation Three – Cont’d

  • In February of 2025 Schneider Geomatics expanded north into the Great Lakes Region with the acquisition of Great Lakes Engineering, Inc. GLE specialized in comprehensive engineering, consulting, and surveying services for government, commercial and private clients. With over 20 years of experience in these markets, GLE brought substantial experience and depth of knowledge with a team comprised of professionals in land surveying, site planning, and design with services that include utility planning & engineering, site design, municipal engineering, and construction management.

Generation Three – Cont’d

  • Today the third generation of Schneiders, Barry and Victoria Schneider Temple, John and Marilyn’s children, continue to keep the family tradition and legacy alive and well. They, along with Raul Zavaleta, comprise Schneider Engineering Corp.’s board of directors with Barry serving as the chair. Barry’s engineering background lends an analytical approach to today’s business issues while never forgetting the three steering principles of service. Victoria’s business acumen is influenced by her background in law and human resources along with her interpersonal skills, and like her parents, a profound passion for service. Raul rounds out the board with more engineering background along with an outsider’s perspective on business. Collectively the Schneider board guides Schneider Engineering Corp. d/b/a Schneider Geomatics and several other Schneider family business interests.

  • For over 63 years, Schneider Engineering Corp. has remained a family-owned business dedicated to strength in relationships and service within a construct of team-based values.
